Air Quality and Health Index

“Get To Know It!” Campaign

An average person takes about 20,000 breaths a day.  That’s an amazing 10,000 litres of air that pass through your lungs every day!

No matter where you live or the state of your health, the quality of the air you breathe each day affects you. Even when you can't see it or smell it, air pollution can still be a threat.

The Air Quality Health Index is a new public health tool that was developed to help you make informed decisions to better protect yourself and those you care about. It’s the first health tool of its kind in the world and provides real-time air quality ratings in your community and related health messages for at-risk groups and the general public.

The Index rating is from 1 to 10 and the higher the number, the higher the risk. The Index is now reported in 14 communities throughout BC on Environment Canada’s Weather Office website, accessed through www.airhealth.ca.

To increase awareness about air quality and health, the Ministry of Environment has partnered with the BC Lung Association, the Government of Canada, Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley Regional District to promote the resource.

Communications outreach plans also include partnering with health and environment groups to help increase awareness. To learn more about the Air Quality Health Index in BC, visit www.airhealthbc.ca.
