Vaping products are battery-powered devices that heat a liquid solution to deliver an aerosol (vapour/cloud) that the users inhale. The liquid inside the cartridge is called e-juice (vaping liquid or e-liquid) which often contains a carrier solvent of propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerol, nicotine and flavours consisting of chemicals and other harmful substances.

What are the health effects associated with using vaping products?

Short-term health effects include coughing, sneezing, exacerbation in asthma symptoms and increased heart rate. The long-term health effects of using vaping products are currently unknown and under scientific examination. However, several studies suggest that health effects of vaping can be similar to those of cigarette smoking. These include the development of lung disease, heart disease and some types of cancer. Additionally, children and adults have been poisoned by swallowing the e-juice or absorbing it through skin.

Vaping products can explode and cause fires that may result in burns and injuries. The lithium-ion batteries in vaping devices can be dangerous especially if they are not properly used, stored, carried, or charged.

Are vaping products a less harmful alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes?

There is a misconception among youth and adults alike that vaping products don't carry any of the harms of smoking cigarettes. Vaping products are in fact harmful and not safe for youth consumption.

For heavy smokers, vaping presents a less harmful alternative if used as a complete substitute for traditional cigarettes. While less harmful compared to traditional cigarettes, the use of vaping products still exposes the lungs to nicotine, particulate matter, heavy metals such as lead, and other cancer-causing toxic chemicals.

The use of vaping products by youth and young adults has been escalating in the recent years and becoming very common. Similarly, there are increasing concerns from parents, educators and healthcare providers as there are many misconceptions and unknowns surrounding this topic.

For this reason, the BC Lung Association has partnered with Vancouver Coastal Health and Fraser Health Authority to develop a Vaping Products Prevention Toolkit. The purpose of this toolkit is to raise awareness and increase the knowledge of educators, parents and healthcare providers on vaping products to help guide youth towards making an informed decision with respect to using vaping products.

The toolkit consists of:
