The BC Lung Association's Healthy Indoor Environments Team is engaged in research, outreach, and advocacy around radon in real estate. Our goal is learning what real estate professionals know about radon, what they are doing, and how BC could learn from best practices around the world.
Many real estate associations and councils across North America have taken special efforts to ensure people learn about radon when they are buying and selling their homes. A cancer-causing radioactive gas produced by the natural decay of uranium in rocks and soils, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, killing approximately 3,360 people a year in Canada. Radon can become trapped and accumulate in homes and buildings unless systems are installed to prevent it.
